Two Children With Gunshot Wounds On Sunday Evening
Newberry 911 received a call at approximately 6:35 pm on Sunday about a report of a child who had been shot at a residence off Wilson Road, just outside the City of Newberry.
During the response, telecommunicators ascertained that another child may have been wounded as well.
The first deputy on the scene found two children, ages two and three, with single gunshot wounds–one to the hand of one child and the other to the foot of the other child.
Sheriff Lee Foster says that the scene was chaotic, with several minor children present in the home in addition to the two wounded.
One child was transported by Newberry EMS to an area trauma center, and the other child was taken by medevac helicopter to a trauma center.
According to Sheriff Foster, preliminary investigation revealed that the children may have been playing with a firearm obtained from an unsecured location within the home.
Deputies were still on the scene on Sunday night, gathering statements, conducting forensics, and obtaining evidence.
Sheriff Foster stated that none of the wounds appeared to be life-threatening.Additional information will be provided as it is made available to WKDK.
