Town Crier Appointed For Newberry

 In Local News

Mayor Foster Senn has appointed Newberry’s Bob Montgomery as the Town Crier. Town Criers have been a part of American history since the arrival of European settlers and were often the primary means of communication in towns where most of the population was illiterate. Town Criers announced laws and proclamations, public notices, and events, among other declarations.

Crier Montgomery is the only Town Crier in South Carolina who is a member of the American Guild of Town Criers (AGTC). The AGTC was founded on July 7, 1997, at the first Town Crier Competition in the United States held at historic Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are currently governed by a board comprised of seven board members with elections every four years.

Montgomery plans to take part in Newberry events, specifically the upcoming Revolutionary War Monument Dedication ceremony to be held on Friday, July 3 at 12 p.m. in Memorial Park. This is a collaborative effort with the City of Newberry, Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Newberry County and the Newberry County 250 Committee.
