Top 10 Things You Can Do For a Safer At Home July 4
Top 10 Things Every Newberrian Can Do for a Safer at Home 4th of July
With the recent request from SCDHEC for South Carolinians to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 by making safe and responsible plans to celebrate the Fourth of July, we have a few suggestions for you to have a Safer at Home weekend. This Independence Day may not be like those before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a joyful one to remember!
1. Make Homemade Popsicles with Local Produce!
Head down to @MikesProduceNewberry for your pick of local produce in an open-air market, for making tasty homemade popsicles you can enjoy on the 4th with your family! Peaches, plums, some berries, and maybe even a bit of locally sourced milk for a creamy addition. The possibilities are endless!
2. Take a Bike Parade Then & Now Photo
We will miss the @HarperStreetBikeParade this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get dressed up and decorate our bikes at home for a Bike Parade Then & Now photoshoot! The neighborhood is asking for folks to show their love for the parade by sending photos of their families at the parade “then” and recreating old photo favorites for a “now!” These side-by-side photo comparisons are sure to be hilarious and fun as the parade has been around for nearly 2 decades. Do you have a teen that was in the parade as a tot? Share your then and now photo re-creations! Never participated in the parade? Show your patriotic style by posting #HarperStreetBikeParade photos online from home to stay connected with community!
3. Fire up the Grill!
Nothing says Independence Day like a smorgasbord of grilled goodness! Grab your mask and stop by the Palms Meat & Seafood Market for steaks, fresh domestic fish & seafood, house made sausage, and more! They even have extra fixin’s, sides, sauces, local wines, and more for you to try. You can also stop by Figaro Market for pre-made dinners, sides, tasty gourmet ice creams, craft beers, and many other quality specialty goods (we love the fresh desserts like lemon bars and giant cakes)!
4. Create Water Fun at Home
It’s going to be a HOT one! Give the kids a chance to cool off and get some energy out by setting up sprinklers in the grass. Try fun watery twists to games like Freeze Tag (Have the kids run and dance around the turned-off sprinkler while you man the tap. Turn the water back on, and players must freeze- yes, in the spray- until you turn it back off again. Any player that moves while the water is on- no matter how shocking the cold water is- is out!). Do you have a swing set? Add a sprinkler for a magical swing under a waterfall! Create a water slide with a play slide or by making a slip and slide out of a household tarp and a dash of dish soap. They’ll be entertained for hours!
5. Hold a Red, White, and Blue Family Recipe Challenge
Who will create the best Red, White, and Blue recipe to remember? Fill your cart at foodlion.com, for Pick-Up, with red, white, and blue produce, candy, and more to see who has the most creative (and tasty) patriotic creation! Will it be Dad’s red pepper, white cheese, and blue/purple onion pizza? Will it be the youngest’s red velvet cookies dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with blue sugar?
6. A Cold Glass of Homemade Lemonade & Social Distanced Visit Outside
We hope you got some lemons during your shopping to make tasty homemade lemonade. Although not every family will be able to gather close for the 4th of July, that doesn’t mean you can’t try a visit from an acceptable distance (6 or more feet). Set up a socially distanced table for lemonade drinks and spread out on the porch, patio, or in the front yard. It will do your heart good to see the ones you love and share memories of holidays past.
7. Make Patriotic Crafts as a Family
Try creating a few Fourth of July keepsakes for a fun family craft time. Don’t feel comfortable shopping in-store? Fill your cart for delivery from Wal-Mart with craft supplies like colored paper, markers, paints, and more. Want to support local? Check out Armfields in downtown Newberry for crafty goods too- they have even offered curbside pickup in the past for customers. We like the idea of creating fun patriotic mason jars that can be used for…
8. Catching Lightening Bugs!
Whether you made a 4th of July craft jar to house your bug buddies or use a leftover pickle jar from the fridge, catching lightening bugs is a quintessential southern summer experience. Catch the bugs in your jar and set them outside for nightlights by a picnic dinner with the family. Release your bug friends at the end of the night and wish them well!
9. Watch the Fireworks From the Comfort of Your Car
The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is excited to be able to continue to offer the annual fireworks celebration to all who may wish to safely view from their car. At approximately 9pm the fireworks show will begin at Newberry High School. Tune in to WKDK to listen to patriotic tunes accompany the display as it lights up the sky!
10. End your day with Sparklers in the Driveway
After a long day of celebration and fun at home end it with a small family sparkler party in the driveway. Make a wish as the sparklers fade. Although these memories may be different from the ones you’ve made in the past, perhaps that’s what will make them shine over time to you and your loved ones. A day together to remember that was different, but happy.
