As we reported yesterday, the Newberry Fire Department responded to White Oak Manor at 2555 Kinard Street on Tuesday in response to a call of a fire on the roof of the building.
Newberry Fire Chief Keith Minick said upon arrival the fire had been extinguished by a contractor working on the roof through use of a fire extinguisher. The contractor had been using an open flame to repair the roof when it ignited plywood at the building’s air conditioning unit.
There were no injuries, Minick said and all residents were moved to another area of the building by staff at White Oak Manor. The fire department used electric fans to remove smoke from the kitchen area.
Minick said he was appreciative of EMS for standing by to assist if it was necessary to move anyone from the building.
“Thank you also to the staff and maintenance at White Oak Manor for being engaged and assisting us in bringing the situation under control in a professional manner,” he said.
