UPDATE:  Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece has confirmed the body discovered on February 24 at Lake Murray was that of missing person Carlos Alexis Baca Aguilar, 22, of Columbia.

An autopsy is scheduled for February 26, 2020 in order to determine Mr. Aguilar’s cause of death.

This incident remains under investigation of the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, and Newberry County Sheriff’s Department.

Monday’s Original Story: A body was found in the water near the campsite of a missing person from Dreher Island State Park.

Newberry County Water Rescue and Dive Team recovered a body in approximately just off the shore from the campsite where an individual was reported missing.

Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry County Water Rescue and Dive, DNR, and South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism staff continued the search that was conducted Sunday. Shortly before 3:00pm Monday, divers found the body in approximately nine feet of water just off the campsite.

Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece will release the name of the body found once positive identification has been made and family members have been notified.

Sheriff Lee Foster offered his condolences to the family and gratitude for all the personnel involved in the search, most of them volunteers. “We are very blessed to have people willing to give of their time to help people in need, especially in today’s inclement weather,” said Sheriff Foster.
