Police Officer Identified As Collision Victim

The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is investigating a collision that happened on Wednesday at around 5:40 pm. The accident occurred at the intersection of SC 395 (Nance Street) and Highway 34.
According to SCHP Corporal David Jones, a 2015 Ford Taurus (traveling south on 395) collided with a 2022 freightliner tractor-trailor (travelling east on Highway 34), causing one injury and one fatality.
The drivers of the Ford Taurus and tractor-trailer were both transported by EMS to an area hospital. The driver of the Ford Taurus later succumbed to injuries.
This accident involved the fatality of City of Newberry Police Officer, Lt. Michael Wood. Wood was responding to a call for service at the time of the accident.
Lt. Wood began his career with the City of Newberry in 2003 as an officer with the department, rising through the ranks and was promoted to Corporal in 2006, Sergeant in 2008 and Lieutenant in 2017.
Police Chief Kevin Goodman asks that the officer’s family and the community be lifted in prayers.
The collision is also being investigated by the Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). Stay tuned for additional information later.
