Newberry College Begins 170th Year With Record Enrollment

 In Local News

Bolstered by a substantial increase in online and graduate students, Newberry College begins its 170th academic year with a record estimated enrollment of 1,752 students, continuing the College’s recent momentum and growth.

The new enrollment record surpasses last year’s historic high of nearly 1,740 students and reflects Newberry’s continued strength in its traditional undergraduate population alongside significant growth in online and graduate education.

“Another record enrollment demonstrates the strong return Newberry College provides on our students’ educational investment,” said Dr. David Harpool, president of Newberry College. “Newberry is routinely recognized for its value and affordability, helping students earn a high-quality education while minimizing student debt. Our growth in online and graduate education is especially encouraging because it shows that Newberry is increasingly serving students at every stage of their educational and professional journey.”

Online and Graduate Education Fuels Growth

Newberry College has significantly expanded its portfolio of flexible, career-focused programs in recent years, creating new opportunities for working professionals and adult learners to earn undergraduate and graduate credentials.

Among the College’s newest offerings are two online education degrees: the Master of Education in PK–12 Educational Leadership and the Master of Education in Higher Education Leadership & Student Success. The programs expand Newberry’s growing graduate education portfolio and are designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles in schools, colleges, and universities.

Newberry has also expanded its Master of Science in Organizational Development & Leadership and Master of Arts in Criminal Justice with career-focused areas of study, including artificial intelligence management, cybersecurity management, exercise science, healthcare administration, and human resources leadership. These specialized areas are also available as stand-alone graduate certificates, providing professionals with flexible options to build targeted skills or continue toward a master’s degree.

Additional online undergraduate offerings include programs in cybersecurity, computer science, digital marketing, and healthcare administration, along with new emphasis areas in hospitality management and paralegal studies.

The expansion reflects the College’s strategy of developing programs that respond to workforce needs while providing students with flexible pathways to earn credentials and advance their careers.

Strengthening the Student Experience for Traditional Students

Newberry College is also strengthening the traditional undergraduate experience by creating clearer connections between classroom learning, hands-on experiences, and career preparation.

Beginning this fall, students who complete the College’s core curriculum will earn a new Certificate of Employability Skills, a micro-credential designed to recognize the practical, transferable skills students develop throughout their Newberry education.

The credential highlights competencies employers value, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, reliability, initiative, digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and research literacy, while helping students better articulate those skills to future employers.

The new micro-credential is part of Newberry’s broader commitment to optimizing experiential learning, ensuring students can connect what they learn in the classroom with internships, co-ops, research, service, leadership opportunities, and other real-world experiences.

“Our goal is to make sure students leave Newberry with more than a degree,” Harpool said. “We want them to understand the skills they have developed, demonstrate how they have applied those skills through meaningful experiences, and confidently communicate the value they can bring to an employer.”

As Newberry College celebrates its 170th anniversary, the record enrollment represents both the strength of its traditional residential college experience and its evolution to serve a broader community of online and graduate learners.
