Newberry Academy Announces New Head Of School

The Newberry Academy Board announces the selection of 1991 Alumnus, Travis Gilliam as the new Head of School. Travis has worked as athletic director at both Newberry Academy and Laurens Academy. He has taught classes to elementary, middle, and high school students.

Gilliam is an acclaimed head coach with three SCISA 1-A volleyball championships and was an assistant basketball coach at Newberry Academy. He is well respected among SCISA leaders and his peers.

He comes to Newberry Academy after serving more than 16 years with Senn Freight Lines. Gilliam was in charge of human resources, recruiting, and safety management.

He is married to an educator, Karla,

who is the Dean of Curriculum and Online Learning at Piedmont Technical College. They are proud parents of 2023 Newberry Academy soon to be graduates Cassie and Christian.

Gilliam received his Bachelor’s degree from Newberry College and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Education degree from Liberty University.

Mike Fanning SCISA Director of Athletics said, “This an exciting time for the Newberry Academy family.

Travis has a sincere and passionate love for the school. He will serve the students and parents well.”

Newberry Academy Board Chair Doyle Waites said, “We are excited to have Mr. Gilliam as our new Head of School. He will bring the perspective of a parent and alumnus to our school. We know that he loves the academy and he wants to work with the staff, parents, and community to enhance the best parts of our school and promote Newberry Academy. With this decision the board is confident that Mr. Gilliam will continue to move NA in a positive direction with the collective efforts of teachers, parents, students, and alumni.”

Newberry Academy Search Committee Chair,  Tim Baker added, “We had several great candidates and we eventually narrowed it down to final interviews. Everyone on the board was engaged and we had a long discussion about each. We encourage the community to rally behind our new head of school.”
