UPDATE:
According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the mother of two toddlers who were shot on Sunday night has been charged, along with the biological father of one of the children.

Authorities said they were called shortly after 6:30 pm Sunday to a home off Wilson Road in Newberry.

The sheriff’s office said they arrived to find a “chaotic scene” with several children, two of them with gunshot wounds.

Authorities said the children, ages 2 and 4, were both shot–one in the hand and the other in the foot.

One child was taken by Newberry County EMS to an area trauma center, while the second child was taken by helicopter to a trauma center.

Authorities said it was determined that the gun was found by the children in a closet. Investigators have not yet determined which child discharged the firearm.

According to statements gathered at the scene, the mother, Tyresa Najae Cunningham, 28, reported she was cleaning the home, while Tyleik Jaewon Sanders, 21, and the biological father of one of the wounded, stated he was in the shower when the firearm was discharged.

Both Cunningham and Sanders were taken into custody.

Cunningham is charged with unlawful neglect toward a child, and Sanders is charged with unlawful neglect toward a child and obstruction of justice.

Authorities said Sanders disposed of the gun before deputies arrived.

The two appeared in court for a bond hearing on Monday. Cunningham was granted a $20,000 bond, while Sanders was granted a $30,000 bond.

As of later in the day Monday, both remained in jail at the Newberry County Detention Center.
