Come celebrate Newberry’s diverse cultures at the City of Newberry’s first-ever International Festival held this year on Saturday, March 29. The festival will take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in downtown Newberry.
Patrons will enjoy authentic cuisine from around the world as they learn about this year’s spotlight countries of Japan, South Korea, Iceland, Mexico, Spain and Zimbabwe.
Each of this year’s spotlight countries will have their own station within the event area highlighting fun facts and information from their country.
The Global Beats stage located in Memorial Park will feature a variety of entertainment including live music from Upstate Jazz Fusion and Mariachi Orion, demonstrations from the Columbia Kendo Team and taekwondo. Families can then explore a variety of free activities provided by the Newberry Arts Center.
The food trucks throughout the event area will boast a variety of international foods, including desserts. Along with their full menu, each food truck was encouraged to prepare an ‘appetizer menu’ to allow visitors to purchase a smaller portion, with the goal of being able to sample from each of the vendors.
Paired with the food vendors, the Newberry Opera House will be serving a variety of international beer and wine. These will be served inside of the opera house starting at 11 a.m. until the last call at 1:15 p.m.
Don’t miss this exciting celebration of culture, food and community.
Devan Moore, the city’s tourism and events coordinator, invites visitors to visit the red event tent to get information on the event’s scavenger hunt. Those that complete the scavenger hunt can return the paperwork back to the tent for a prize while supplies last.
“We’re excited for everyone to come out and learn about the cultures within our very own community. We hope to see you there,” Moore said.
