Fugitive Felony Confronted By Officers, K9 “Coba” Dies
UPDATE: From various reports, the K9 has been identified as Coba, 4, a Belgian Malinois mix, joining the agency in 2021.
The agency confirmed Coba’s passing hours after the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said the dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian.
Coba lived with Special Agent Richard “Cole” Powell.
The condition of the suspect is unknown at this time. Several deputies were treated for minor cuts following the shooting.
Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputies and SLED Agents were attempting to serve a fugitive felony warrant in the Prosperity area off of Gravel Road.
The suspect was found hiding inside the home of a family member and emerged.
A law enforcement K9 confronted the suspect inside the house, along with a Deputy and SLED Agents. The suspect produced a firearm and fired at the dog and the officers, striking the K9. The officers returned fire at the suspect, eliminating the threat.
The K9 was transported to an emergency veterinarian and the suspect was transported to an area trauma center. No updates on the conditions are available at this time.
Several Deputies have been treated for minor cuts.
As per protocol, an outside agency has been requested to investigate further. Nearby Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has been asked to assist.
