Former Employee Arrested After Armed Standoff At Martin’s Landing

 In Local News

Late Friday morning, a man armed with (what appeared to be) a handgun entered the Martin’s Landing restaurant in Prosperity, prompting law enforcement to respond.

Deputies arrived at the restaurant to find an armed man inside the bar area with some staff and patron members there as well. Deputies detained the suspect without incident.

The man arrested is Duan Patrick Barnes, 40, of Prosperity, a former employee who had been terminated recently. Barnes returned to the business apparently to demand payment for his previous employment.

Deputies determined that the “handgun” was actually a BB gun, and Barnes was carrying it in a police-style holster.

Barnes was taken into custody and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center. He faces charges of assault and battery – first degree and kidnapping.

Sheriff Lee Foster said, “We are grateful no one was hurt in this incident because the pistol looked very real, and the suspect was aggressive. This is absolutely no way to settle a dispute over money. We have courts and regulatory agencies for that.”
