The Newberry Fire Department responded to 1418 Harris Street Monday night at approximately 7:19 p.m. in reference to a house fire called in by the next door neighbor. When crews arrived on scene they found fire extending from the rear of the home.
Fire Chief Keith Minick said no injuries were reported and homeowners were not home during the incident. The home had active smoke detectors installed. Minick said he would like to remind the community of the importance of closing doors in the home, especially when sleeping.
“There was one room in the house that had minimal damage from smoke and heat because of the closed door,” he said.
Minick said working smoke alarms must be in place for early detection as well.
“Since the call, we have been able to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the neighborhood from concerned citizens,” he said.
The fire is currently under investigation, however Minick says that a lightning strike cannot be ruled out at this time.
