City Manager Shares City Of Newberry Updates

 In Local News

In his report to City Council on Tuesday, City Manager Jason Taylor shared that the grand opening of the Newberry Arts Center would take place on Friday, April 10. Taylor said they hoped to have artists within the space demonstrating the purpose of the different rooms throughout the building.

The South Carolina Clay Conference will be held in the new space starting February 27.

As part of Taylor’s report, Planning and Development Director Wayne Redfern shared that the splash pad expansion at the Newberry Recreation Complex (part of the CPST referendum) was working on its first step, underground plumbing.

“Next, the foundation work will start, and we should have a building up within the next two months,” Redfern said.

Redfern said they were pushing for the expanded portion of the splash pad to be open by June.

Other updates to the recreation complex include the miracle league field, which Redfern said was expected to start later in the spring. However, he said by the end of this year, all projects related to the CPST should be completed.

The amphitheater project, Redfern said, was anticipated to start in May and hope to finish between June-October of 2027.

Taylor said he felt it helped tie the city and college together and would be a good complement to the Newberry Opera House.

As a final update to council, Taylor shared that the city had received $413,000 from FEMA related to Hurricane Helene. While the city has submitted approximately $2.1 million, Taylor said there was currently $1,600,000 in review and that they had indicated this would be coming back shortly.
