Arrests Made In Armed Robbery, Attempted Murder
Sheriff Lee Foster announces the arrest of two suspects identified in an Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder that occurred in the Little Ranches Dr. area off Highway 34 that occurred early Thursday morning.
On Thursday (November 2), Newberry County 911 received a call that an individual had been shot during a robbery at a residence on Little Ranches Dr. and the victim was being transported to the hospital in a personal vehicle. The victim, a 24-year-old male was seen at Newberry ER and then transferred to Richland Hospital with a non-life threating injury to his legs.
During the investigation, investigators obtained information from witnesses and victims identifying three of four subjects. Investigators were able to obtain warrants and started looking for the three subjects late Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning.
Investigators received information that two of the subjects were at a house on Speers Street in the City of Newberry.
Investigators from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and Newberry City Police then went to the address on Speers Street and were able to quickly surround and contain the house, taking two of the subjects into custody.
Sheriff Foster identified Antonio Malik Washington, 26, of 3442 Elmwood Circle and Jaywon Tylik Jones, 24, of 1121 Speers Street, as being taken into custody for their part of the Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder for the Thursday morning incident.
During the investigation and after obtaining a search warrant, five handguns with extended clips and an AR 15 were located. Investigators also found drugs in the house where two small children were present.
Antonio Malik Washington was presently out on bond for Attempted Murder and had seven active General Session Bench Warrants.
Sheriff Foster advises that Investigators are looking for the third suspect, identified as Daquan Malik Cooper,23, of 2531 Upper Lane Drive, Newberry. “These are cowards who prey on law-abiding citizens placing people in harm’s way or worse. We are working very closely with Newberry City Police, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, ATF, and the 8th Judicial Circuit to bring a blanket of protection to our citizens and putting those who can’t obey the law in jail,” said Sheriff Foster.
Investigators with Newberry City Police and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office began to share information and learned of the shooting that occurred at the Scotchman on Nance Street on November 2 around 11:58 pm when 911 calls began coming in.
Once the Newberry Police arrived on scene, the suspects had fled the area and the victim went to a near-by family members home where an ambulance came and rendered aid.
The victim, a 26-year male, was flown to Richland Hospital for a gunshot to his thigh and hand, which did not appear to be life threating. Newberry City Police Chief Kevin Goodman said, “Our Investigators and Police officers arrived to find over 30 rounds fired striking at least two businesses in the area.” “We are continuing to investigate this case with Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and ask for any assistance from our community to help stop the violence.” Chief Goodman went on to say, “The residents of this City and County deserve to live in peace and feel safe in their community. It’s individuals like this, with their reckless actions, that take that right away from everyone.”
Antonio Malik Washington is charged with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, Conspiracy, Possession of a Stolen Pistol, Possession of a Weapon or Ammunition by a Person Convicted of a Violent Crime, and three counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Jaywon Tylik Jones is charged with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, Conspiracy, Possession of a Stolen Pistol, Possession of a Weapon or Ammunition by a Person Convicted of a Violent Crime, two counts of Unlawful Neglect to a Child, and three counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Both Jones and Washington are being detained at the Newberry County Detention Center after seeing a Newberry Magistrate who denied their bond.
