117th Engineer Brigade To Deploy In Late October

Colonel William Matheny, Commander of the 117th Engineer Brigade, which is headquartered in Newberry, spoke to City Council about the 117th’s upcoming deployment.  The 117th will deploy in late October with orders for a maximum of 400 days.  Colonel Matheny says they hope to return home next September.
The Brigade will hold a Brigade Casing Ceremony at Eleazor Arena at Newberry College on Thursday, Oct. 23, in which they will fold and pack their brigade flag, and then once deployed, they raise their flag at their new base.  .
In honor of the soldiers who will be in Newberry in preparation for the deployment and the families that will be coming to Newberry on the 23rd, the City of Newberry will be flying American flags downtown next week. In addition, the city will be encouraging other community support for the troops while they are deployed and will be publicizing ideas later.
COL Matheny says there are 10 soldiers that live in Newberry County that will be deployed with the 125 soldiers of the 117th. The 117th will oversee engineering operations in 10 countries.
