City Councilman Edwin Wicker To Retire After 13 Years
After serving the City of Newberry and District 2 for over 13 years, Councilman Edwin Wicker announced last week that he will be retiring effective September 23, 2024.
Wicker shared the announcement with City Council members during last week’s City Council meeting.
“After a lot of soul searching and thought, I have decided to retire from City Council,” Wicker said.
After working for 55 years, Wicker said the company he worked for had been sold and he felt that it was time to retire from both his full-time career and part-time position on City Council.
Wicker and his wife, Tina plan to retire in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
“I’ve lived in Newberry my whole life and it’s going to be a change with mixed emotions,” Wicker said.
Achievements during his tenure on City Council that he is most proud of, Wicker said included improvements to many of the city’s parks, including the opening of the Newberry Recreation Complex and Oakland Tennis Center.
Mayor Foster Senn said Wicker had made a mark that would last a long time in the City of Newberry and that he would be missed.
“Edwin has been an outstanding city councilman,” Senn said. “He’s been dedicated throughout to work for effective local government and to make Newberry better. He’s been a key part of many successes Newberry has had. He’s been a pleasure to work with and a good friend to everyone eon council. We thank Edwin for his service.”
A reception honoring Wicker’s contributions to the City of Newberry will be held prior to council’s next meeting on Tuesday, October 8 at 6:15 p.m. in the lobby of City Hall. The community is invited to attend.
City Manager Jason Taylor said Tuesday that he had spoken with the Newberry County Election Commission and based on Wicker’s date of retirement, a special election for his seat in District 2 would be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and that the city would be communicating with them on that process.
