A 17-year-old juvenile has been taken into custody by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office for Distribution of Marijuana and is being detained at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
On December 12, a student at a local Newberry School was found to be non-responsive but breathing and EMS had to be called. It was discovered through speaking with the student, they had received a marijuana edible from another student and ate it during school.
The student started having affects from the edible marijuana cereal bar and EMS was called to care and then transport the student to the hospital for treatment.
The student who gave the marijuana edible was identified, located, and taken into custody and transported to the Newberry Sheriff’s Office where the student was interviewed.
The interview and investigation lead Deputies to Union County where a search warrant was done on the student’s home, locating additional edibles, marijuana, money, and a gun. Being able to work so closely with area surrounding law enforcement agencies, Newberry authorities were once again able to stop these drugs from getting to children.
The 17-year-old juvenile will now be facing criminal charges in Union County as well.
“This is a very dangerous combination of mixing drugs and sweets that you just don’t know what drug is being used or just how potentate the mixture is and could cause serious illness or potential death. We are so grateful the student is going to be okay,” stated Sheriff Lee Foster.
