According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a person is dead after driving off the side of the road just outside of Newberry County on Friday.

Officials say that a 2016 Ford Explorer was headed west on Westwoods Drive, about one mile from Chapin when the driver drove off of the left side of the road, striking a mailbox and an embankment before overturning.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified by Lexington County Coroner as Christopher Lee Morris, 37, of Little Mountain. Morris had been wearing a seat belt.

This crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
