UPDATE: Man Found With Gunshot Wounds Identified
UPDATE:
The Newberry County Coroner’s Office, along with Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Highway 66 near the vicinity of the Newberry and Laurens County line. The call was received by 911 Communications in the morning hours of December 19, 2021.
Coroner Laura Kneece has identified Jamal Jermaine Alston, 24, of Fairfield County as the decedent in the incident. An autopsy has been scheduled for this week.
This incident remains under investigation of the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and SLED.

At approximately 4:00 am Sunday morning, Laurens County 911 received a call about a bloody white male walking on SC Hwy. 66 at the Laurens/Newberry County line.
Both Laurens and Newberry County deputies responded to find the man at the county line having multiple gunshot wounds. Although he was conscious at the time, he could not provide the investigating deputies with a great deal of information.
The victim was transported to an area trauma center by Newberry County EMS and Whitmire Rescue.
Deputies with Newberry and Laurens Counties are investigating the case along with assistance from SLED. If anyone has information, please call your local law enforcement or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.
