Suspect Flees After Struggle With Deputy

 In Local News

As we reported Wednesday afternoon, an early morning traffic stop results in a Deputy fighting for his life and Law Enforcement searching for the suspect.

Around 3:00am on Wednesday June 8, a Newberry County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was patrolling Hwy 34 near Hwy 176 when he noticed a white Dodge Charger near the wood line of a pull off area with its head lights off. The Deputy approached the vehicle and observed an individual in the vehicle identified as Shyhiem Tyriek Boyd 25 years old of 50 Gallman Rd, Prosperity.

The Deputy while speaking with Boyd detected a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle and had Boyd exit the vehicle. Boyd was discovered to have marijuana in his pocket at which point the Deputy advised he was under arrest and was being handcuffed.

Boyd refused to comply with commands and began to jerk away and push the Deputy. During the struggle Boyd and the Deputy fell to the ground, with Boyd at one point being on top of the Deputy. The Deputy was able to get Boyd off him and attempted to deploy a taser, which Boyd fled on foot out of the Deputy’s sight. As the Deputy secured the vehicle Boyd was in and conducted an inventory of the vehicle, a handgun was discovered. Sheriff Foster states that Boyd was also discovered to have outstanding warrants for Breach of Peace and Malicious Injury to Property.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office Bloodhound Tracking Team were called to track Boyd but were unsuccessful.

Boyd now faces charges for Possession of Marijuana, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer while Resisting Arrest, Unlawful Carry of a Firearm, and Driving Under Suspension 3rd Offense.
