Portions Of Main Street To Be Closed On Halloween
The Newberry Police Department will be closing Main Street from Kinard to Crenshaw Streets on October 31 for Halloween on Main. The street will be closed from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Police Chief Kevin Goodman said while he received a request a year or so ago to close portions of Main Street on Halloween for trick-or-treating, it unfortunately came in too late for him to discuss with SCDOT as well as residents in the area.
This year, Goodman said that Lieutenant Emily Seibert and Sergeant Yolanda Williams went door to door, speaking with residents on Main Street to inquire as to if closing the street on Halloween night would be an inconvenience.
Barricades will be placed at each end of Main where it intersects with both Kinard and Crenshaw Streets. All side streets on Main Street will be open to traffic.
“With trick-or-treating on Main Street getting bigger every year, it creates a more dangerous situation for our young trick-or-treaters,” Goodman said. “When Lt. Seibert came to me proposing that we close this section of Main Street, it was a no brainer.”
While Seibert said she knew there would be concerns about parking, that there were lots available such as at Newberry A.R.P. Church (corner of Main and Calhoun) as well as the parking lot of the former Family Video location (Main and Glenn Streets). Other parking lots mentioned included Founders Federal Credit Union and McSwain Evans.
“We want kids to have a fun night of trick-or-treating with safety being a priority,” Seibert said.
The event would be foot traffic only, Seibert said, with no golf carts allowed within the barricades.
