Newberry Fire Department responded Wednesday to the report of a house fire at 2802 Hunt Avenue at approximately 4:53 a.m.

Captain Gene Shealy said when the fire was reported, the concern was of residents still inside the home. However, upon arrival, firefighters found that they were safely out of the home.

Shealy said the occupant was able to knock down the fire significantly with a garden hose and crews then finished extinguishing the fire upon arrival and assisted in smoke removal from the home.

“One occupant was transported for smoke inhalation, but is in good condition,” he said.

The American Red Cross was notified to assist, Fire Chief Keith Minick said .

Minick said the home had working smoke alarms which notified the residents that they had a fire.

“We are grateful they had working smoke alarms that helped save themselves as well as their home from further damage,” Minick said. “We stress to our citizens that they are very valuable tools to have in your residence.”
Minick said if residents were in need of a smoke alarm, they could contact the fire department at 803-321-1030 to see if they qualified for a free 10 year maintenance free smoke alarm.
