NCMH and Newberry College Partnership
Newberry County Memorial Hospital and Newberry College have announced they have entered into a long-term relationship to ensure the growth of healthcare in Newberry County. The commitment between the College and Hospital will expand the current partnership in nursing and orthopedics, and provide a daytime clinic on the Newberry College campus.
Newberry Hospital and Newberry College are working together to develop short and long-term plans to address the shortages in nursing and to look for additional avenues to provide the best healthcare possible for the community. Part of the short-term plan is the approval by the governing board of Newberry Hospital of $500,000 to grow the nursing and orthopedic programs and create a daytime clinic that will be located in the Newberry College Nursing & Health Science Center. Ground breaking for the building took place in February of 2022 on the Newberry College campus.
“Newberry County is fortunate to not only have exceptional organizations such as Newberry College and Newberry Hospital, but to have the commitment from these organizations to unite to ensure the future of healthcare for our community,” said Bruce Baldwin, Chief Executive Officer of Newberry Hospital. “Newberry County is truly a special place.”
Newberry College launched the school of nursing in 2009 and in 2016, added the healthcare management major. In 2017, the College expanded their nursing program to include RN-to-BSN and then announced the addition of a degree in health science in 2019. With the addition of the state of the art Nursing & Health Science Center on the Newberry College campus, the partnership between the College and the Hospital is the next step in ensuring quality healthcare in our community.
Jerry Alewine, Ph.D., Dean of Nursing and Health Science at Newberry College said, “The culmination of this partnership will be reflected in the healthcare that will be available to our residents.” “Our graduates will have a strong educational background with the hands on skill necessary to have successful careers in healthcare.”
“Moving forward, the partnership between Newberry College and Newberry Hospital, will not only provide opportunities for students today, but will create a legacy that will endure,” said Maurice Scherrens, Ph.D., President of Newberry College. Scherrens went on to say, “Exploring new endeavors is important to the growth of our students, college, hospital and the future of our community.”
