Deputies with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and the State Law Enforcement Division were attempting to serve a felony warrant on Gravel Rd. near Lake Murray in Prosperity on Tuesday.

Investigators with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office obtained Burglary First warrants for James Robert Peterson, 37, of Harmon’s Quarters Rd in Prosperity, for a burglary that happened on Blacks Gate East Rd on May 24, 2024.

Deputies received information that Peterson was hiding in his mother’s home on Gravel Road. Several attempts were made to locate Peterson at that residence but were told by his mother that he was not at home. Later, further evidence was established that he was at that home.

A team of SLED Agents, including a K9, and Deputies went to the home to attempt to serve the warrant. The mother, Scarlett Boyd, 61 of Gravel Road in Prosperity, told deputies that she had not seen Peterson in a while. However, a Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputy saw Peterson moving through the house from a window.

The K9, the handler, and a Deputy Sheriff entered the home and confronted Peterson in the hallway of the home. Peterson produced a firearm, shooting the dog, then turning the weapon on the warrant team. The officers returned fire, disabling Peterson.

K9, Coba, was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, but succumbed to his wounds. Peterson was transported to an area trauma center and is currently undergoing treatment for his wounds.

Per protocols of both SLED and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, an outside agency was called in to perform the investigation of the officer involved shooting and the murder of Coba.

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon was contacted and is providing the investigation.

Peterson is currently under charges for the burglary. Once completed, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will present their investigation to Eighth Circuit Solicitor David Stumbo.

Scarlett Boyd has been charged with Hindering a Law Enforcement Officer serving process and is in the Newberry County Detention Center under a $20,000 cash/surety bond.
