City Manager Shares Updates With Council, Community
In his report to City Council, City Manager Jason Taylor shared several updates at Tuesday’s regular council meeting.
City staff met with Newberry County staff last week, Taylor said to finalize the design of the amphitheater to include the stage, grounds and existing building. The design was then turned over to consultants that should finalize them and put them out to bid, Taylor said.
The bids should be awarded in August, and he said they hoped within 12 months that the facility would be up and running.
Taylor then shared information about a state grant the city hoped to receive that would address traffic on Wilson Road in Newberry. He said the city was trying to be proactive and put turning lanes in and move utilities to put a better face forward. Also proposed were mast arms as opposed to the current traffic lights and planted medians in that area.
The Newberry Fire Department recently received a Volunteer Strategic Assistance and Fire Equipment (V-SAFE) grant, Taylor said in the amount of $14,050. These funds will be used for upgrade current technical rescue equipment to include hardware, life safety rope and webbing. Able to purchase personal harnesses for each of our firefighters.
technical rescue hardware and harnesses associated with turnout gear.
Taylor shared that the city’s budget had been balanced following work sessions with council and that first reading on the proposed budget would take place on Tuesday, June 3.
As an announcement, he said that Gully Washer Splash Park, located at the Newberry Recreation Complex was officially open for the summer season.
Also at the recreation complex, Taylor shared that the skate park had been completed and that people were steadily using the facility. An official ribbon cutting day/time will soon be announced.
