An emergency city council meeting was held on Friday. Motion was made by Councilperson Lemont Glasgow and seconded by Councilperson Jackie Holmes to approve an ordinance to declare a state of emergency.

This ordinance gives Mayor Foster Senn the authority to call for an emergency meeting of Newberry City Council for the specific purpose of dealing with the effects of a disaster or public health emergency and after making a diligent effort to notify the members of City Council of such a meeting, thus finding that a quorum of City Council members cannot be assembled, shall further have the authority to declare a State of Emergency for the City of Newberry.

Senn shared that instead of council having to potentially get together on Sunday afternoon to declare a state of emergency for the city, this ordinance would give him the authority to be able to declare it without having to gather in person.
