Chapin Man Charged With Murder, Kidnapping Occurring In Newberry

Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman announces the arrest of David Ray Clark, 53, of Chapin, SC in connection with a homicide and kidnapping that occurred in the City of Newberry on the night of Thursday, September 4.

Clark was taken to the Newberry County Detention Center where he has been charged with Murder, two counts of Kidnapping, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of Certain Crimes, Armed Robbery and Unlawfully Placing a Child at Risk of Harm.

On Friday morning, the Newberry Police Department received a call about a person being shot in the College Park Apartment complex and a woman and child being forced into a vehicle. Upon arrival at the residence, officers had to make forced entry into the apartment. Once inside, they found a male victim deceased on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound.

With the help of Lexington County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect and kidnapped victims were located in Chapin, SC and transported back to Newberry by Investigators from the Newberry Police Department and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece has identified the victim as 53-year-old, Dexter Tobias Gary, Sr. of Pomaria as the victim who was found deceased at 3021 College Park Drive.

Goodman said that this investigation covered several counties, and would like to thank investigators from the Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and Lexington County for their hard work in this case.
