Revolutionary War Monument Dedication To Be July 3
“Oyez, Oyez, Oyez,” cries Town Crier, Bob Montgomery as he invites the community to attend the official monument dedication for the Newberry County Patriots of the American Revolution.
The Philemon Waters Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), the Jasper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), along with the City of Newberry will be dedicating the monument in Memorial Park on Friday, July 3 at 12 p.m.
The monument specifically recognizes the known battles and skirmishes in Newberry County during the war.
The monument’s design will be unique for Newberry as it’s copywritten and cannot be recreated. Constructed by Brown Memorial of Florence, SC, it will be located in the far end of Memorial Park, near the corner of Main and Boyce Streets. The SAR spoke before City Council in 2025 to gain approval for the monument’s design, which is cosponsored by the DAR.
Millie Westermeyer, regent of the Jasper Chapter, said it was a tremendous honor to be involved with the memorial.
“We’re so thankful for the republic that our patriots created for us and we’ve been able to maintain,” Westermeyer said. “We’re grateful to be Americans.”
The ceremony will not only include the dedication of the park’s newest monument, but a joint proclamation from the City of Newberry and Newberry County, speakers from the SAR and DAR, and the laying of wreaths from Revolutionary War organizations.
A color guard presentation, musket salute and patriotic music will also be included as part of the ceremony.
Master of Ceremonies will be Jimmie Coggins, with an appearance by Town Crier, Bob Montgomery.
A reception will follow immediately in the Edward Kyzer Newberry Firehouse Conference Center. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held within the conference center.
The event is a collaborative effort with the SAR, DAR, City of Newberry, Newberry County and the Newberry Couty 250 Committee.
