As we reported on Tuesday, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece has determined the cause of death of 22-month-old Madden James Madray, of Prosperity, to be blunt force trauma. She has further determined the manner of death as accident.
On Saturday, February 9, at approximately, 8 p.m. Madray was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet SUV, on Macedonia Church Road near Wheeland School Road about six mile outside of Chapin, while apparently playing in the proximity of the fog-line. Madray was pronounced on-scene. Per witness interviews, Madray was playing within close proximity and within eyesight of the adults present, however as children tend to do he got out of eyesight in the blink of an eye. Kneece further states, “As a community we should not tolerate negative comments or public persecution towards Madden Madray’s family. It is sad that in today’s society we are quick to judge and persecute someone over an incident that literally could happen to any parent or any person watching a young child. We, as a community should be praying and offering our continued support for the family of the victim as well as the operator of the vehicle.”

James P. “Jimmie” Coggins is President and General Manager of WKDK. Jimmie’s passion for radio was born at an early age and has been in his blood since childhood. Following part time employment in the business throughout high school and college, Jimmie went full time at WKDK in 1974 after graduating from Newberry College. Working on air, in sales and all other facets of the business, including management, his real passion is Sports Broadcasting. Jimmie has served on numerous community boards and committees and is a former President of the Rotary Club of Newberry, serving as President in 1979. Newberry College is one of his passions and he has served on numerous boards and committees including a current stint as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was inducted into the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree in 2007.
Jimmie and his wife Doris have been married since 1974 and have 2 children Jessica and Parkes.

Carole Murray is Program Director and Midday host on WKDK. Her radio passion began with her "playing DJ" with records and albums with a cassette recorder when she was about 7 years old. Her passion grew, as did her interest in radio broadcasting, and when she was a junior in high school, she decided to apply for a job at WKDK. She has been affiliated with AM 1240 ever since!
After working wth the station during summer and Christmas breaks in the 1980s, Carole was able to work full-time on-air and in sales for a while before having to move to the Columbia area in the latter part of the decade. She was able to return to a weekend capacity in the early 1990s, and even back to a full-time announcing/sales role in the late 90s. When the midday position became available in August 2011, she had the chance to return to WKDK in another full-time capacity. In addition to her midday duties, Carole is the Program Director for the station, as well as programming for weekday afternoons and overnights. She also oversees the music area, as well as helping out in the sales department too. Additionally, she is responsible for the station's website wkdk.com, along with graphics for the station as well.
Before returning to WKDK in 2011, Carole had worked part-time at a Columbia FM station, announcing on weekends and weeknights, with some midday fill-ins as well. She had also done some voiceover work for Columbia area radio and television advertisements. Although she enjoyed her tenure in Columbia, Carole is glad to have been able to return to the Newberry area...and broadcasting from her hometown station of WKDK allows her to feel even closer to home!
Carole and her husband Glenn live in the Little Mountain area with their two sons, Chase and Will.
